Soroptimist International Barbados Statement for International Women’s Day March 8th 2024 from President, Dr. Debra Joseph

International Women’s Day (IWD) is a global celebration observed on March 8th each year, dedicated to honouring the achievements and contributions of women throughout history. It is also a day to raise awareness about the ongoing struggles and challenges that women face worldwide, advocating for gender equality and women’s rights. The first International Women’s Day (IWD) was held in March 1911.

Soroptimist International Barbados is an organisation that works to improve the lives of women and girls through programmes leading to social and economic empowerment. Soroptimist International focuses on issues such as gender-based violence, human trafficking, education, and healthcare for women and girls.

Here’s how Soroptimist International Barbados supports International Women’s Day and beyond. This is what we do:

1. Advocacy and Awareness: Actively participate in IWD events to raise awareness about gender inequality and advocate for women’s rights. This includes organizing seminars, workshops, and discussions to address issues affecting women globally.

2. Empowerment Programmes: Continue and expand ongoing empowerment programs, such as providing scholarships, mentorship programs, and vocational training for women and girls. These initiatives help women gain the skills and confidence needed to overcome challenges and pursue their goals.

3. Community Engagement: Engage with local communities to understand their specific needs and challenges. By working closely with communities, we tailor our programs to address unique issues faced by women.

4. Partnerships and Collaborations: Collaborate with other organizations, NGOs, and government bodies to amplify their impact. Joining forces with like-minded entities allows for a more comprehensive and effective approach to addressing women’s issues.

5. Supporting Women Entrepreneurs: Focus on supporting women in entrepreneurship by providing resources, mentorship, and networking opportunities. This can contribute to economic empowerment and financial independence for women.

6. Campaigns Against Gender-Based Violence: Actively participate in campaigns against gender-based violence, promoting a culture of zero tolerance.

On International Women’s Day and throughout the year, Soroptimist International Barbados can continue its mission to empower women and girls, working towards creating a world where all women have the opportunity to lead fulfilling lives free from discrimination and violence.
